This is a simple Safari 5 extension to add the current URL from the active tab/window to Pinboard. If you have any currently selected text in the active tab/window, the extension will pass that along to Pinboard for use as the bookmark’s description.
The extension automatically adds a new toolbar button identified by the Pinboard icon. Clicking on the toolbar button will envoke the same behavior as that of the “same page bookmarklet” provided by Pinboard. The major benefit of the toolbar icon over the bookmarklet is that you can place it closer to Safari’s location bar.

This is an unofficial Pinboard extension, it is not endorsed or maintained by the fine folks at Pinboard. The Pinboard logo was shamelessly lifted and then modified to fit into Safari’s HIG by myself. Please yell at me if the extension doesn’t behave as expected within Safari and please notify Pinboard if the service itself exhibits problems.
For the unware, Pinboard describes itself as a “bookmarking website for people who want to reliably keep track of the things they find online.”
Requirements
- Safari 5, with Extensions enabled
- Active Pinboard account
- A URL to bookmark
From Apple’s documentation:
Extensions are disabled by default in Safari 5.0. You need to enable the Develop menu in the Advanced pane of the Safari Preferences panel, then enable extensions in the Develop menu.
Jonas Wisser compiled some screenshots on how to enable Extensions if you are more of a visual person.

Known Issues
As a installation note, after installing the extension the button doesn’t appear to work on tabs that are already open. Opening a new tab or window though and things work as normal. I’ll work on getting out an update to avoid this behavior.
