Leave it to Sven-S Porst reminds us why every and now then we’d like to strangle an Apple software engineer:
What the heck is WWAN supposed to be? Why would my computer want any of that? Or me? And how can they present me with a text, containing: WWAN, SW, Cingular, Novatel, XU870, ExpressCard, HSDPA, Sprint, EX720, EVDO, Ovation, U720, Verizon, XV620, V740 — all of which qualify as unintelligible letter-crap where I come from. Are Apple customers supposed to be fluent in both English and the contents of electronics catalogues these days or what? The text doesn’t even contain the usual link to a web page with further explanations, as Apple updates occasionally do.
He also comments generally on the mess that software updates are across operating system and platforms. There’s a recurring theme in a lot of the gripes among computer users today - it is not the big stuff software makers are messing up, it is all the little things that turn a minor event (updating your computer for instance) into such a chore. Many of us simply don’t have the time (nor do we want to make the time) to deal with these issues, we’d like it to “just work”.
