Clocks and Localized Tranist Information

There’s a trend in data mining technology to emphasize localized results and it may be creeping into consumer products as well. A Japanese company is selling a clock aimed at commuters (or rail enthusiasts) who frequent the Yamanote Line. The line travels around central Tokyo and a complete loop takes just over 60 minutes, making it an ideal infographic for the face of the clock. Unfortunately the current clock is not directly linked-in to information about the rail system that could “shift” the data points (upcoming train stops) on the clock to match the current time. An enterprising hacker might have luck cooking up a widget that utilized an XML feed (or screen scraping) of their local transit data and matching that to a clock interface. Probably the perfect thing for the upcoming “always-on” wifi-enabled home appliance like Chumby or Nokia’s n800.
